Longview Philanthropy's mission and activities

Longview Philanthropy is a non-profit based in London and Oxford. We design and execute bespoke giving strategies for major donors. Our grant recommendations are driven by the conviction that we can use evidence and reason to find the highest-impact opportunities in the world. We focus on global challenges that could transform our future for many generations to come, including safely navigating emerging technologies and fostering a society with a more long-term outlook. Everything we offer is free-of-charge, independent, and reviewed by external experts. We currently advise donors in Europe, North America and Asia, whose giving capacity ranges from $1 million p.a. to several billion. 

 

Alongside advising donors on where to give, we conduct outreach and connect major philanthropists to relevant research and experts in order to share the concepts behind effective philanthropy and longtermism with them.

Responsibilities

The responsibilities for this role will vary by experience, but are likely to include:
 

  • Email drafting: proactively drafting emails to a wide variety of important stakeholders, including grantee organisations, UHNW advisees and our expert network.

  • Creating and managing contact follow-up systems: ensuring all CEO emails are replied to in a timely fashion; ensuring regular contact is kept with key stakeholders.

  • Conducting research ahead of meetings and preparing detailed meeting agendas: e.g. research into call participants, organisations and relevant topics.

  • Conducting research to inform the CEO: this could be on a wide variety of topics (people, events, conferences, summarising other research); communicating this succinctly in writing. 

  • Scheduling meetings & booking business travel arrangements: manage the diary and schedule of the CEO; book flights, transportation, and lodgings for the team.

  • Monitoring budgets and expenses: compiling regular expense reports, monitoring budgets for various projects. 

  • Supporting, researching and executing our events programme and internal operations: working alongside our CEO Natalie Cargill and Managing Director Simran Dhaliwal

  • Supporting, researching and executing our recruitment process: working alongside our Managing Director, Simran Dhaliwal.

  • Managing Longview’s public media: responsibility for keeping our website and other public profiles up to date.

  • Everything else: a wide variety of tasks not listed above (e.g. attending Longview events with the team to ensure they run smoothly). 
     

The successful candidate will work closely with our CEO Natalie Cargill and be managed by (weekly 1-1s, performance reviews) our Managing Director, Simran Dhaliwal.

  • Thrive with a high task-volume: someone who enjoys working on many different things, is flexible, and is comfortable with regular context switching.

  • Familiarity with effective altruism: we are a mission-driven organisation and familiarity with the concepts of effective altruism and longtermism guide our content, work and strategy. 

  • Discretion and confidentiality: commitment to maintaining appropriate levels of confidentiality.   

  • Existing right to work in the UK.

  • Experience as an Operations Analyst, Executive Assistant, or similar role. Alternatively, a job focused on written communication.

Salary, Benefits and Location

  • This role is in-person, full-time and London based. We have an office in the beautiful, plant-filled Second Home Spitalfields

  • Starting salary of £35,000 - £60,000, dependent on experience and skills. There is flexibility in this for exceptional, experienced candidates.

  • Benefits include: generous paid vacation time, equipment budget, training budget, well-being budget, private healthcare (Bupa) and dental care, and a well-stocked office fridge. 

  • We also have flexible working hours and some team members regularly work from home (we have all worked from home for the past c. 12 months). We would request that new colleagues work from the office for the first c. 3 months to ensure a smooth onboarding period (government guidelines permitting). We typically work regular hours (c. 9 am-6 pm) but occasionally work outside of this when important, time-sensitive projects require it or when attending/hosting events. We have a strong preference for candidates willing to respond to such requests outside of regular hours.

  • Second stage: work task (4 hours)

  • Third stage: in-person interview (physical distancing guidelines dependent, 1 hour)

  • Fourth and final stage: in-person c. 1-week work trial

    • We recognise an in-person trial is a significant commitment. Compensation will be provided to all candidates who complete a work trial (£750/working week). We are keen to work with the final candidate(s) to ensure they are able to complete a work trial, and aim to be flexible and accommodating.
